Eric Cantor was not defeated because of his stances on immigration. Cantor was defeated for a myriad of reasons, many of which I am guessing are inscrutable to those who do not live in his district. Immigration was an issue, but only one of several and a fairly minor one that was not often discussed. If any single reason for Cantor’s defeat can be discerned it is because he was too easily (and probably accurately) castigated as the ultimate Washington insider, a fake conservative who didn’t really believe in what conservatism means to the people of his district, and as someone who is too cozy with the Democrats or just doesn’t put up enough of a fight with them. In short, he was caught out for being a statist, part of the problem not the solution.
